January 2024
This photograph was made in the month of January 2024 in the dunes of the Netherlands. It was made in the “Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen” to be precise, during one of the coldest periods this winter. I went to the dunes with the idea of photographing foxes when i heard that there had been floods in the southern part of the dunes. Combined with the low temperatures, this could hopefully make for some interesting conditions.
In the hope of seeing flooded trees surrounded by ice i went to the dunes, which is where i took this photograph. There were multiple versions made, but this version with a full reflection of the tree surrounded by frozen reeds, was my favourite.
It was challenging to find attractive trees to photographs in these conditions, because this area mostly consists of dune trees/bushes. These trees are abundant in the Dutch dunes, but aren’t very pretty to photograph. This was one of the only times this winter where the ice was strong enough to stand on. I tried to make the best of these rare conditions that were handed to me. The combination of the high water floods and the freezing temperatures made this photograph possible.
